KSINC seeks consultant to prepare 10-year roadmap

Coastal shipping, mariner training among areas of interest

V. Sajeev Kumar

Kochi, Nov. 11 For developing its activities on international levels, the State-owned Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC) has invited expressions of interest for the preparation of a road map to chart out the company’s phased growth plans.

The company is seeking to expand and diversify into new areas to exploit its full potential. Coastal shipping, training of mariners, and diversification of construction activities are some of its areas of interests. The selected consultant should identify other areas that would be suitable to the company, officials sources said.

KSINC proposes to prepare a detailed, strategic 10-year road map for its phased growth based on which the developments will be planned.

Field work

The consultant will be required to conduct field studies, gather and analyse data and project growth. They will have to carry out a SWOT analysis on the company and submit their recommendations besides studying areas of operations, finding business opportunities, and suggesting action plans.

KSINC is a Government of Kerala undertaking registered under the Companies Act, and has three operating and maintenance units at Kochi. It is involved in transportation of bulk cargo through inland waterways, transportation of passengers through ferry/jhankar, backwater tourism, construction and repairs of marine vessels with capacities up to 700 tonnes displacement.

The company carries bulk materials, petroleum products, potable water, and acids among others through its fleet of barges. It started transportation of industrial raw materials such as rock phosphate, and sulphur in self propelled steel barges since 1980 for the public sector FACT.

On an average, the company is transporting 30,000 tonnes of bulk raw materials per month, aggregating an annual quantity of more than 3.50 lakh tonnes.

Tourism, training

KSINC had also ventured into backwater tourism in a big way by utilising the vast potential of inland waterways in the State.

For tourists, it operates a number of boats, including the luxurious Sagara Rani, which is the only vessel of its kind in Kochi.

The company also offers a sailing resort, Lake Princess, with night accommodation for 16 persons.

KSINC also runs a training school to meet demands for personnel in the inland water transport sector.

This is the only training school of its kind in Kerala, the officials added.
