LPG backlog in Kerala to be cleared

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 13 The backlog in the supply of LPG cylinders in Kerala will be cleared soon.

The Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr C. Divakaran, who held discussions with officials of oil companies and distributors, told newspersons here on Tuesday that LPG consumers, who had completed the normal waiting period of 21 days, would be given the cylinders within the next ten days.

He said that frequent agitations like hartals in the State were disrupting distribution of LPG cylinders. He appealed to all political parties to exempt vehicles carrying cylinders during the hartals. If needed, the Government would give police protection to these vehicles on such days, he added.

Backlog

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has the maximum backlog of cylinders in the State, followed by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation. The companies have been asked to clear the backlog between five and ten days.

The Minister said that the meeting decided to form district-level committees comprising the District Collector, District Supply Officer and representatives of oil companies in all the districts to monitor distribution of cylinders. The committees will meet regularly to look into complaints of consumers and other issues and report to the Government.

The Minister suggested at the meeting that the oil companies should give new connections in the State only after clearing the backlog. Officials of oil companies, on their part, said that 74 new gas agencies would be opened in the State within the next fortnight.
