New Delhi, Nov. 15 Commercial vehicles manufacturer Ashok Leyland on Thursday said that it expected sales to remain flat in the second half of the fiscal as compared to the same period last year. The company has also planned a slew of bus launches in the coming few months which would further give a fillip to its sales.

The company sold 34,068 vehicles in April-September this fiscal, similar to the number of vehicles sold in the first half of last fiscal. However, Ashok Leyland sold 43,010 vehicles in the second half of the year.

“There has been some improvement in the availability of finance. In the second half sales will be better or as good as last year,” said Mr Vinod K. Dasari, Chief Operating Officer, Ashok Leyland.

Launches 49t truck

The company launched 4921TT, a 49 tonne truck priced at Rs 19.75 lakh. This would mark the company’s entry into the segment where there are already five players including Tata Motors, Volvo, Mann Force Trucks amongst others, said Mr R.N. Rao, Special Director, Sales and Service.

Mr Dasari said that sales of the 49 tonne truck segment were at 550 units last year and expected to touch 2,000 this year. The company has already sold 400 units and expects to sell 1,000 units in the current year.

More launches

Meanwhile, the company is also gearing up to launch luxury buses that would compete with Volvo and also ultra-low floor city buses for which it is hopeful to bag government orders. Ashok Leyland already has about 55 per cent market share in the bus segment. The company said that while other categories of vehicles were experiencing decline in sales, the bus segment was recording healthy growth.
