Decision on pruning, consolidating Air India flights on Nov 23

New Delhi, Nov 20

A decision on Air India pruning and consolidating its services so that passengers are not harassed would be taken on November 23 at a meeting between the Chairman and Managing Director, Mr V. Thulasidas, and the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

This was decided at a meeting called on Tuesday by the Secretary of Civil Aviation, Mr Ashok Chawla, to review the operations of Air India in view of the recent disruption of normal flight schedules of the airline. Last few days, several Air India flights have been delayed including the Delhi-London-New York flight that was delayed by more than 24 hours.

Besides, flights to Toronto, Abu Dhabi and Muscat and Shanghai were also delayed by several hours. The disruption in services saw passengers getting into scuffle with Air India staff.

A coordination mechanism that includes senior airline officials would also be set up at Delhi airport to ensure that passengers are not inconvenienced. Besides, the Ministry of Civil Aviation would be monitoring important flights movements on a daily basis.

In the recent past, the airline has been having difficulties in maintaining its normal schedule for a variety of reasons including aircraft from the fleet being pulled out for VVIP flights.

In addition, the airline has also made available aircraft for Haj charters, which has also affected its normal schedule.
