Male passengers do their bit

Lalu Prasad’s turnaround story of Indian Railways is fairly well known. Now comes a nugget of valuable information that some Rs 78 lakh have been added to the railway coffers from an unusual source. Responding to a query in Parliament, the Ministry revealed that in 2006-07, about 50,472 male passengers were apprehended while travelling in ladies coaches and a sum of Rs 77.91 lakh realised from them as fine!

Not only that, the fine collection has been increasing year by year, the amount being Rs 62.72 lakh in 2005-06. Lalu Prasad must surely be pleased at the growing revenue stream.
