Foodgrains States - Andhra Pradesh AP grains output to top 100 lakh tonnes Our Bureau Hyderabad, Nov. 23 Andhra Pradesh is expecting a total foodgrain production of 100.10 lakh tonnes this kharif season as against the normal figure of 83.41 lt. The season seems to be a windfall for the oilseeds sector, with the production expected to double from 10.57 lt to 20.40 lt. This is largely boosted by bountiful groundnut production, which is projected to grow two-fold. The crop is expected to yield 16.29 lt as against the normal production of 7.01 lt. The Agriculture Ministry has pooled in information on crop situation from all the districts and arrived at a total cropped area of 42.46 lakh hectares this season as against the normal area of 41.50 lakh ha. “Contrary to the criticism, the rice production is expected to go up by 13 lt this season from the normal production level of 61.30 lt to 74.35 lt. This is largely due to the increase of paddy area,” a top official of the Ministry told Business Line. The rise is also attributed to the increase in yields. “The rice productivity will go up to 2,968 kg a hectare from the average of 2,642 kg a hectare,” the official said. With additional acreage being brought under cultivation, the paddy crop area has gone up by two lakh hectares from the normal area of 23.20 lakh ha to 25.05 ha. Cotton too is forecast to witness a phenomenal growth. The crop would yield 25.79 lt (18.68 lt), putting to rest the speculations that the area of cotton has dipped in the State this year. Among the other contributors is sugarcane with an expected production of 192.33 lt as against the normal figure of 172.27 lt. It, however, doesn’t mean that all the crops are growing. Jowar has been forecast to register a dip in production from the normal figure of 2.55 lt to 1.93 lt. Sunflower too is expected to end up with a lower figure of 0.54 lt (0.09 lt). Castor too will follow the suit, with 0.97 lt (1.08 lt). More Stories on : Foodgrains | Andhra Pradesh
