“As we have seen in advanced countries such as China and Germany, there has been much advancement in technology in production and processing of used plastics,” he said. With more than 55,000 processing units located across the country and a projected investment of over Rs 10,000 crore in the current Plan period, the Indian plastic industry appears to be truly at crossroads to take its destined place in the world of plastics.

Gas cracker project

Highlighting the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s initiative in launching the flagship Gas Cracker project, Mr Handique said the move signals that a recycling plant is indispensable.

Innovative projects need to be developed to create awareness among the public besides educating them regarding waste disposal. The industry should concentrate more on R&D on recycling options and recycled products. Use of biodegradable plastics in this sector will also be useful with proper R&D support, he said.

The first project to tap $5-billion US plastic consumer goods market is under way. The process of establishing display centres followed by warehousing facilities in Los Angeles in on, Plexconcil said.

In the second phase, the council will set up display centres-cum-warehouses in Miami and New York to facilitate better geographical spread in the US and access South American markets.
