Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 25 The Centre has sanctioned Rs 20.94 crore for upgrading the Kerala State Institute of Virology and Infectious Diseases in Alappuzha, said Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss.

He made this announcement on Saturday evening after laying the foundation stone for the super speciality block being constructed at the Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

The Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital is one of the 13 institutions across the country selected for improvement under the PMSSY.

The proposed National Programme for Emergency and Trauma Care will help address the high rate of road accidents in Kerala, Dr Ramadoss said. This initiative, which is currently being implemented in Andhra Pradesh, will be rolled out across the country over the next three years.

At another function organised at the Regional Cancer Centre in the city, the Minister announced that the National Mental Health Programme, which is currently being run in seven districts of Kerala, would be extended to all 14 districts of the State.

Dr Ramadoss also announced that the Regional Cancer Centre would be given an enhanced Central grant of at least Rs 25 crore in the Eleventh Plan.

The Centre will soon announce the launch of the National Urban Health Mission aimed at improving primary healthcare services in urban areas, he said.

Other major national health programmes on the cards are a National Programme for Prevention of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases, a National School Health Programme, and a National Speech and Hearing Programme, he added.
