Roadways States - Karnataka Bangalore highway in bad shape The 370-km long Bangalore-Mangalore road is largely in a bad condition; particularly, the 37-km long stretch between Sakleshpur and Hasan on the Western Ghat section. But for the poor road, the traffic to New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) would have been much higher. The issue of improving the road was discussed in Delhi. The Shipping Secretary discussed the matter with National Highway Authority of India as part of the port connectivity programme and it transpired that the maintenance of the road was the responsibility of the State Government. There being no elected Government in the State now, the possibility of any improvement of the road in foreseeable future appears to be remote. Not surprisingly, the NMPT authorities have concentrated on the larger movement of rail-borne traffic. Three years ago, the port's rail-borne traffic was 2.3-lakh tonnes which jumped to 3 million tonnes in 2006-07 and further to 3.4 mt till November of this fiscal. This was possible because the port's own railway network has been totally revamped and new lines have been laid. Four lines have been constructed by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company; the Hasan-Mangalore line has also been commissioned. OUR KOLKATA BUREAU More Stories on : Roadways | Railways | Karnataka
