Partial power tariff hike in Kerala

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 26 The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission today announced a revision of power tariffs for some categories of consumers in the State.

While there is no change in the power tariff for domestic consumers, most low-tension industries and electricity used for agricultural purposes, some categories of high tension consumers will pay more.

Extra high tension consumers and high tension industrial and commercial consumers will pay 50 paise more per unit. However, there is no change in the tariff for non-industrial and non-commercial high tension consumers.

Rain factor

Announcing the new tariff schedule, Mr C. Balakrishnan, Chairman, Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission, said that the good rains received this year had helped prevent an across-the-board hike in tariffs.

The availability of additional low-cost hydro electric power as a consequence of the good rains is the factor that helped the Commission avoid a steep hike in power tariffs, he added. The Commission announced that the new tariffs would come into effect on December 1.

For some categories of consumers, the power tariffs have, in fact, been reduced. For instance, the rate for temporary connections for illumination purposes, exhibitions, public meetings and so on has been brought down from Rs 13.5 per unit to Rs 12 per unit.

There has been a similar reduction for consumers in the low tension LT VI(C) category.
