Coconut & Copra States - Kerala 2008 to be ‘Coconut Year’ in Kerala Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 28 The Kerala State Coconut Development Board in association with the Department of Agriculture will observe 2008 as ‘Coconut Year’. This was decided at a meeting convened by the Agriculture Minister, Mr Mullakara Ratnakaran, to discuss the problems faced by coconut growers in the State. The meeting observed that a lobby with commercial interests was working behind the campaign against the use of coconut oil. The campaign usually reached its peak during the Onam season when the use of coconut oil increased manifold. According to the Coconut Development Board, projects to protect the coconut sector will have to be initiated on an urgent note, especially at a time when the production and productivity of coconut have increased substantially. Otherwise, families of coconut growers, numbering around 35 lakh, would be put to severe hardship, the Minister said. More Stories on : Coconut & Copra | Kerala
