Mr Justice Jayanta Biswas of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday stayed the retrospective effect of the notification regarding increase in the bonus to jute workers from Rs 3,500 to Rs 10,000. Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) moved a writ petition challenging the notification dated October 27, by the Ministry of Law and Justice, amending Section 2 of Bonus Act 1965, which was tantamount to an ordinance. While staying the retrospective effect, the court has stipulated that all the members of IJMA will deposit the retrospective effect amount (as accrued) from April 2006 to October 2007 in a nationalised bank. If the petitioners deposit the amount, the stay would continue. The matter will be heard after January 1. —
