Trade & Labour Unions Kochi port strike called off Our Bureau Kochi, Nov. 30 The three-day-old indefinite strike at Kochi port has been called off by the striking employees on Thursday night following the intervention of the Union Shipping Minister, Mr T.R. Baalu. The Minister had held a meeting in New Delhi to discuss the issues in connection with the strike. The meeting was attended by Mr Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Mr Chandran Pillai, MP, Mr N. Ramachandran, Port Trust Chairman, and Mr A.K. Mohapatra, Shipping Secretary. Later, the Minister appealed to the employees to withdraw the strike forthwith and return to duty. A spokesman of the joint forum of trade unions said that the Minister had agreed to look into the grievances of the workers. All the employees had joined the duty from the third shift, which started at 11 p.m., and loading and unloading operations are in full swing at the container terminal, he said. The Minister had also assured the unions that efforts would be made to resolve all issues through mutual discussions, he said. Accordingly, the Port Trust Chairman is convening a meeting with the representatives of trade unions and the officials of DP World at the port on Saturday.
