Nod for consolidating CBEC’s IT infrastructure

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 30 The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved revised proposal from the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) for consolidating its information technology (IT) infrastructure.

Briefing newspersons on the decision, the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, said here on Friday that the revised proposal entails an outlay of Rs 598.97 crore over a period of five years and includes creation of data centre facilities, wide-area network connecting 582 buildings and computing facilities at 1,200 offices.

Mr Chidambaram said that the CCEA had earlier approved an outlay of Rs 257 crore for IT infrastructure. Now, the revised proposal would help enlarge the range of services offered to taxpayers, enhance the scope and coverage of existing services, leverage new technologies, improve the process efficiencies within CBEC and implement standard-driven management of IT infrastructure.
