Another Concor facility in Kolkata?

The Container Corporation of India (Concor) has before it for active consideration a proposal mooted by Kolkata Port Trust for setting up either an inland container depot (ICD) or a container freight station (CFS) within the Kolkata Dock System (KDS). Concor already runs a terminal within KDS. Known as Majherhat terminal, it occupies approximately 50 per cent of the 85,000 sq m of land provided by the port authorities. The unutilised portion of the land, therefore, could be used for setting up the ICD/CFS. The need for setting up an ICD/CFS has arisen in view of the steady growth of container throughput at the KDS; worse, there is no such outfit within the dock. Two CFSs, run by Central Warehousing Corporation and Balmer Lawrie, both Central government undertakings and located outside the dock, are clearly inadequate to handle the burgeoning container traffic at KDS. Concor, therefore, might consider setting up an ICD/CFS close to its present terminal within the dock, but ask for certain financial concessions in return.
