Nicholas Piramal gets US patent for cancer compounds

Mumbai, Dec. 10 Nicholas Piramal India Ltd has received a product patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office for a class of oncology compounds including, P-276-00, its lead molecule targeting Multiple Myeloma.

The patent covers novel compounds, including P-276-00 and processes for their preparation, the company told the Bombay Stock Exchange. The prospective Multiple Myeloma drug is at present undergoing Phase I and Phase II stages of trials on humans in Canada and India. The company is set to undertake Phase I trials on this molecule in the US, a company official told Business Line.

NPIL had earlier been granted a patent in South Africa for its CDK inhibitors. It has related national phase applications in 14 other countries. The company has filed five other patent applications covering different aspects of its CDK inhibitors, it said.

The NPIL shares were down 1.22 per cent on the BSE at Rs 316.05.
