Visakhapatnam, Dec. 11 There is a proposal to open a retail management academy here in the private sector and Andhra University has agreed to accredit the post-graduate course to be introduced in the school, said Mr Pradipta Mohapatra, Chairman (southern region) of the Confederation of Indian Industry.

At a session on retail opportunities in tier two cities here on Monday, he said that in view of the potential of Vizag the CII had taken the initiative to set up the academy in the private sector.

He said the CII would also take up a pilot project here to bring together the smaller producers, such as fishermen, and the retail companies.

Mr Mohapatra said the Vizag zone of the CII had signed an agreement with Andhra University for a skill improvement programme to improve the employability of students.

Vision document

He said the CII was preparing a vision document for Andhra Pradesh (2025) based on the opinion of the general public and not on expert opinion. “It is a different kind of vision document and two eminent professors from the IIM, Bangalore, are involved in the exercise. One of them, Prof Trilochan Sastry, hails from the State.” He said the document would be ready by February-March next year.

Referring to tourism in Andhra Pradesh, he said the State was number one in the number of domestic tourist arrivals, but Tirupati accounted for the bulk of them.

“If you take away Tirupati, tourism potential is underexploited in Andhra Pradesh, especially in the coastal corridor between Kakinada and Vizag,” he said.

Dr Varma Vegesna, Chairman of the Vizag zone of the CII, and Mr G.S. Shivkumar, former Chairman, also spoke.
