AP to extend agriculture insurance to all districts

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Dec. 13 Andhra Pradesh is going to extend agriculture insurance to all the districts in the State, barring Hyderabad, with village as a unit from next kharif season. At present, farmers in 10 districts are covered in the scheme.

Announcing this here on Thursday, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture, said the idea was to give wider risk coverage to farmers. Earlier, the insurance cover was offered with mandal as a unit. But farmers have been arguing that it is of no use for them as it takes into consideration the agricultural performance of all the villages in that mandal and arrive at an average.

“When we were in Opposition, our party had demanded that village be considered as a unit. But the then Government had not respondent positively,” he said.

In the first phase, the Government had introduced the scheme in five districts including Anantapur, Kadapa and Mahboobnagar. It added five more districts – East and West Godavari, Vizianagaram, Kurnool and Medak districts – this kharif season.

The Minister has asked the officials in his Ministry to forward proposals to the Finance Ministry, ensuring inclusion of 12 more districts in the village-as-unit agricultural insurance scheme, when a Budget meeting is convened on December 17.
