Hyderabad, Dec. 15 Mr Yoginder K. Alagh, economist and former Union Minister, has called for a civil society initiative to insist that accountability and autonomy go hand in hand in education.

Delivering the inaugural address at the 49th annual conference of Indian Society of Labour Economics here on Saturday, he said it was important to build fire walls for autonomy that can be legitimised only by accountability.

“For long, accountability in universities has meant that of teachers and karamcharies and not that of administrators, ministers and bureaucracy.”

Prof G.S. Bhalla, Professor Emeritus at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said that advocates of globalisation had always been of the view that the liberalisation and integration would be immensely beneficial.
