Mangalore, Dec. 16India can learn from China the need for establishing more incubators to foster entrepreneurship, says a technical paper at the international research meet on ‘Entrepreneurship in India and China’

Presenting a paper on ‘Entrepreneurship in China: The Role of Business Incubators’ at the meet organised by the T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) in Manipal, Prof Aruna Chandra of Indiana State University, US, showed that China had 500 incubators in 2004 employing six lakh people as against a handful in India.

The incubation market place in China, though relatively recent, is well developed, with the Government playing a predominant role in the business of incubation by channelling resources to tie up with the mandate of high technology-led economic growth.

Because business incubators in China have become a key tool of the Government’s economic development strategy to move to a market economy, incubators have been experiencing fast growth and evolving from comprehensive to greater specialisation and focus.

India needs more incubators, and here India can learn from China, the paper said.

Prof Mathew Manimala of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, called for reforming the education system in India.

The present system fosters rote learning as against enquiry-based learning, which is so important for increasing the supply of entrepreneurs in the country.

Alumni felicitated

The T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) on Saturday felicitated several of its alumni who are either entrepreneurs or are holding important positions in the industry.

The felicitation was part of TAPMI silver jubilee year celebrations in Manipal.

Those felicitated included Mr Ashwin Kamath of Presman (India); Mr Vijay Rego, Founder Director, Riverdale Fashions Pvt Ltd; Mr Ashish Patnaik, Savior Fair (a management consultancy in Navi Mumbai); Mr Devdas Pai from Motorola; Mr Pradeep Shenoy, co-founder of Learning Infrastructure Services; Mr Rohit Nishant, Business Analyst, HP; and Ms Priya Thyagarajan, Business Development Manager, SS Consultants and Investments.
