Environment Emission norms: Kamal Nath critical of pressure on India, China Our Bureau New Delhi, Dec 19 The Union Commerce & Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, today assailed the intense pressure on India and China to reduce emissions and suggested that the “common but differentiated approach” would be the best recipe for mitigating the adverse impact of climate change and trade. Releasing the summary of recommendations of the South Asia Year Book Trade and Development brought out by the non-governmental organisation, Centre for Trade & Development (Centad) here, the Minister said that if developing countries were to take advantage from trade, the only way would be to make them into healthy economies. He said the two challenges confronting the Asian economies were two Fs — food and fuel. Safety netHe underscored the need for providing ‘social security net’ to farmers and harnessing the gains from agriculture through proper restructuring of farm sector. This would help ensure a greater movement of the available workforce out of agriculture to manufacturing and service sector, he added. Delivering the keynote address at the third South Asian Conference on trade and development, following the release of the yearbook, Prof. B.S. Chimni from JNU criticised the extant trading system as unfair which leaves little leeway for policy space and inclusive growth. He emphasised the need for revisiting the current understanding of free trade and its institutional structure. Dr Md. Saeed from the WTO Mission Pakistan lamented that the SAARC countries are not united to present joint strategy on common issues, though they have similar positions in most multilateral forum.
