Symantec develops security software

V. Rishi Kumar

Hyderabad, Dec. 20 Engineers at the R&D centre of security technology provider Symantec have developed security and data management software suite and tools.

These innovations are part of the company’s efforts to provide an all-encompassing solution for enterprises. The India R&D centre has grown significantly over the years and now has over 2,500 engineers. The centre is part of the acquisition of Veritas by Symantec.

New products

The Head of R&D’s Technical Operations in India for Symantec, Mr Anil Chakravarthy, said enterprises are faced with new types of security breaches.

To address the challenge of rising data security breaches, the efforts made by Symantec’s Advanced Concepts Group have been commercialised after beta deployments.

These products have been tested with Symantec customers globally and with a financial services company in India. The next version of the product is poised for release in 2008. Mr Anil Chakravarthy told Business Line that the nature and scope of security breaches has undergone a sea change calling for new set of expertise and tools to address these issues.

Database breaches come due to external threats, which are difficult to track, and from unsuspecting employee within the organisation.

3 distinct layers

Therefore, the security is now being addressed by three distinct layers of security products and solutions – with the first one relating to policy management, which outlines issues of regulations and also governs password usage, second layer is the information policy that governs access to information and lastly end point security for mobile and handheld access devices.

Since security has become central for enterprises, many corporations are outsourcing their security management. This is quite common in other markets.

However, it is yet to gain popularity in India, Mr Anil Chakravarthy said.
