Maruti’s SX4 offered with discounts

Growth driver in A3 segment

SX4 being a new model, Maruti has shunned this strategy so far to maintain the premium image of the brand.

New Delhi, Dec 20 Ever since its launch in May this year, Maruti Suzuki’s top end variant of SX4 is for the first time being offered on discounts. SX4’s ZXi model is being sold at a discount of Rs 5,000.

Though Maruti officials claim that it is the dealers who are offering discounts, a cross-section of dealers that Business Line spoke to, however, said that the discount on the new model was from the company’s end.

Maruti Suzuki which is offering discounts across most models has so far kept Swift and SX4 out of the monthly scheme as it says that demand outstrips supply.

With December being the year end, customers prefer to postpone their purchases as the new year also brings more choices and better resale value. Maruti company spokesperson cites the discounts as a strategy by the dealers to push sales and liquidate the stocks. Maruti’s SX4’s, a premium sedan has been driving the growth for the company in the A3 segment.

According to industry sources Maruti’s SX4 leads the race by selling on an average 3,000 units of the model as compared to Honda City that sells about 2,500 units and Hyundai’s Verna at about 2,200 units on a monthly basis. Maruti already has discount of about Rs 12,000 on Wagon R, Rs 15,000 on Estilo and Rs 3,000 on Alto, over and above a free insurance that the company has on the platter for these models.

However, SX4 being a new model, Maruti has shunned this strategy so far. “December being a year end is a month when there are lot of exciting offers. In the past few years this has led to sales during the month peak to high levels due to the innovative approach of manufacturer, dealers and financiers all put together,”said Mr N R Narayanan, Group Business Head, Vehicle loans, ICICI Bank.
