Bangalore, Dec. 24 Reliance Retail may steal a march in introducing the iPhone in India earlier than others, but the company has yet to get the schedule from Apple to stock the mobile phone in its iStore, an exclusive outlet opened by Reliance in November in the city.

Reliance Retail plans to ramp the number of iStores up to 10 this year while 40 more are expected to come up in 18 months across the country.

The iStore in Bangalore is a separate store in a 1,000 sq. ft. space set up in the city’s prestigious shopping centre on MG Road.

The shops are specially designed, in accordance with Apple’s specifications to highlight the US computer and entertainment products brand.

Mr Ajay Baijal, President and Chief Executive (Consumer Durable, IT and Telecom), Reliance Retail Ltd, told Business Line that iStores will offer all Apple products such as Macintosh, i-Mac, iPod, and software and support services.

Japan is the only other country in Asia to have an Apple store.

Reliance Retail also announced the formal launch of the Reliance Digital Store in the city, the third after the National Capital Region centre in Ghaziabad and in Vashi in Mumbai.

The outlet is part of Mukesh Ambani group’s mega retail venture.

The company aims to achieve a sales turnover of $5 billion from the Reliance Digital stores alone by 2011, said Mr Baijal.

“We plan to open a total of 150 Reliance Digital stores across 70 cities over the next three to four years,” said Mr Baijal.

Reliance Digital is a one-stop shop for all technology solutions for consumer electronics, home appliances, information technology and telecommunications.

The store covering an area of 23,000 sq. ft offers 4,000 products of more than 150 brands along with several bundled solutions recommended to meet diverse customer needs, said Mr Baijal.
