The 49-tonner: Mr Anirudh Bhuwalka, Managing Director & CEO, Asia Motor Works Ltd, at the launch of ‘AMW 4930 Tractor’ in Mumbai on Monday. Our Bureau Mumbai, Dec 24 Asian Motor Works Ltd, a recent entrant in the heavy commercial vehicle market, on Monday launched its 49-tonne tractor for the over dimensional and heavy project cargo segment. Priced at about Rs 27 lakh, the tractor has 300-horse power Cummins C300 20 engine. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Anirudh Bhuwalka, Managing Director & CEO, said that due to better road infrastructure and the Supreme Court ruling which bans overloading of trucks, the demand for 49 tonnage tractor has increased substantially. The 49-tonne segment is expected to be a high growth segment with a potential market size of 3,000 to 5,000 units per annum, he said. Mr Bhuwalka said that the Indian truck industry has grown in recent years with ample business opportunities. With rapid industrialisation, sustained GDP growth of more than 8 per cent and the Government’s focus on building the new highway projects like the Golden Quadrilateral project and the NSEW corridors, the freight industry is ready for a major leap, he said. He said that currently 15 per cent of the tractor components are imported but by the end of fiscal 2008 the tractor would be indigenously manufactured. The 4930 tractor will be manufactured at the company’s plant at Bhuj, Gujarat. The plant is spread over 600 acres and has a capacity to produce 10,000 trucks per annum, which is scaleable as per the needs and requirements. Mr R.C. Mangal, Vice-President, Marketing, Asia Motor Works Ltd said that the company would be marketing the 4930 tractor through 29 main dealers spread across the country. The company is also in the process of rolling out nationwide sales, service and spares network, comprising the main dealers and 450 sub dealers, he said. Asia Motor Works has completed test runs of its tractor equipped with global positioning system (GPS) and has rolled out the first trial batch of 25 tractors. With the installed GPS, the fleet owners will be able to have round-the-clock access to the truck through a call centre or services administer ensuring contact at all times with the driver.
