Output increase: A girl preparing to extract juice from sugarcane at Angamally near Kochi. Sugar exports from the country are likely to double to 30 lakh tonnes (lt) in the ongoing season as India enjoys freight advantage over Brazil. Sugar exports totalled 15 lt in 2006-07 season ending September 2007, against 17.28 lt the previous year. Sugar production in 2006-07 is estimated at a record 283 lt against a projected domestic consumption of 190 lt. –
