Perambalur, Dec. 27

An Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC), the fifth in Tamil Nadu, will get functional in the district from December 30.

The Union Minister for Communication and IT, Mr A. Raja, will inaugurate the centre, which functions under the Union Ministry of Textiles, in the presence of Mr A. Sakthivel, Chairman of the Technical Sub-Committee of ATDC, and Collector Mr Anil Meshram.

Accompanied by Mr C.S. Sridhar, Administrative Officer, ATDC, the Collector inspected the equipment procured at a cost of Rs 30 lakh released through the District Rural Development Agency.

The worth of the imported sewing machinery ranges between Rs 40,000 and Rs 2.5 lakh.

Mr Sridhar said the two-month training in sewing would be offered free of cost to 60 self-help group women in two batches.

A total number of 600 persons would receive training over a year at the centre located at the DRDA’s Poomalai Mart. The trainees would be given conveyance expenses and the ATDC would meet the recurring expenditure.

The learners would be placed in jobs at the end of the training. They would be equipped to take up jobs in both woven and knitwear units. The ATDC would also offer programmes of three months to one year duration to provide training in production supervision, quality control, pattern making and computer aided designing.

Mr Sridhar said the centre would gain more prominence in the event of the special economic zone coming up in the district.
