Outlook Web Extras - Washing Machines Samsung plans washing machines rollout from Chennai facility
Bindu D. Menon New Delhi, Dec. 27 Durables major Samsung India is planning to roll out the fully automatic washing machines from its Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai, even as it has commenced its maiden export consignment of televisions to Sri Lanka from the unit. “We are highly bullish about exports. The consignment that we are exporting to Sri Lanka includes 21 and 29 inches Flat, Easy View and Ultra Slim Fit televisions. The total value of exports this year stands at Rs 200 crore,” said Mr R. Zutshi, Deputy Managing Director, Samsung India. Currently, the company is exporting colour televisions, refrigerators, washing machines to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. On the number of washing machines to be manufactured from the Sriperumbudur facility, he said, “the scale and other finer details like investments are being worked out for the forthcoming year”. The Sriperumbudur facility, inaugurated earlier this year, has a production capacity of 1.5 million units per annum for flat televisions and 0.3 million units per annum for LCDs. It is manufacturing 21 and 29 inches Flat and Ultra Slim models as well as LCD models in the screen sizes between 19 and 32 inches. “The Chennai facility will help us respond better and faster to the growing demand for our products in the southern part of the country,” he said. Samsung India has invested $30 million towards the setting up of the facility, which employs around 350 employees at present.
“We plan to work with and develop our vendor base in Chennai, so that we can continuously enhance our competitiveness. In the future, we are looking at the Chennai facility becoming a global manufacturing hub for Samsung’s operations,” Mr Zutshi added. More Stories on : Outlook | Exports & Imports | Washing Machines
