Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 27 The State Government has decided to introduce a 30-minute power cut during the peak load hours from January 1 to 15.

Announcing this after a meeting of the State Cabinet today, the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, said that the power cut will be for 30 minutes between 6.30 pm and 10 pm.

However, the Sabarimala region has been exempted from the power cut because of the ongoing pilgrimage.

The power cut is being imposed on account of maintenance work being carried out at the Neriyamangalam power station, he added.

The Cabinet has also protested against the cut in power allocation to Kerala from the Central pool.

Kerala’s power quota from the Central pool has been cut by 183 MW and this has resulted in a power crisis in the State, he said. The Centre should restore Kerala’s share immediately, Mr Achuthanandan added.

According to the Chief Minister, the State Cabinet has cleared the proposal of the Ports Department to set up a Maritime Institute in Manjeshwram in Kasargod district. The local panchayat has been authorised to identify land for the project, he added.

The State Cabinet also decided to request the Chief Justice of Kerala and the Government of India to reconsider the State’s demand for a High Court bench in Thiruvananthapuram.
