Chemicals Corporate - Human Resources Chevron looking at IITs for engineers
Tapping Indian talent Our Bureau Kolkata, Dec. 27 Chevron of the US, plans to fly over to India to recruit young engineers for its worldwide operations. The company will soon join the campus interviews at IIT Kanpur and Chennai, as part of its plan to hire 6,000 engineers, including chemical engineers, worldwide. Mr Jeet Bindra, President, Global Refining Operations, told newspersons here on Thursday that this was the first time the US energy giant would be visiting the campus of any Indian engineering college. He was in the city in connection with the Indian Chemical Engineering Congress (CHEMCON) 2007. The three-day conference was inaugurated on Thursday. Non-conventional energyEarlier in his address, Mr Bindra said that growing energy consumption has created an unprecedented opportunity for harnessing non-conventional energy sources beyond oil, gas and coal. Even in oil and gas sector, the growing energy demand had turned the focus of the corporate sector across the globe to future sources such as heavier oil, oil sand, oil-shell and so on. “Supply of affordable energy is a challenge,” he said. Chevron had already implemented a $2-billion project for energy conservation and exploring the renewable energy potential. “In addition, we are spending $2.5 billion between 2007 and 2010 in the same area of growth,” he added. Reiterating that India and China are two major drivers of the recent growth in energy demand, Mr Bindra said, “global energy sector is looking forward to India for growth.” Inclusive growthInaugurating the conference, the West Bengal Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, reiterated the State Government’s commitment in setting up a petroleum chemical and petrochemical investment region in the State to achieve its goal of inclusive growth. Referring to the huge number of jobs created by Haldia Petrochemicals in the last five years, Mr Sen said that the State Government considers chemical and petrochemical sector as a major driver of such growth strategy.
