Tea Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Tea exporters’ earnings down P.S. Sundar Coonoor, Dec 28 Tea exporters have earned Rs 312 crore less in the first 10 months of 2007 compared with the same period a year ago, an analysis of the information available with the Tea Board reveals. Between January and October 2007, tea exports fell to 132 million kg from 174 million kg last year. But, the price fetched rose to Rs 97.79 a kg on the average from Rs 92.29. Consequently, the overall earnings dropped to Rs 1,293 crore from Rs 1,605 crore. Exports have fallen in respect of both the South and the North Indian teas. In the North, exports fell to 70 million kg from 77 million kg. This is despite the unit price falling to Rs 114.98 a kg from Rs 122.44 Sharp fallThe loss has been sharper in the South. Here, the asking price rose to Rs 78.20 a kg from Rs 67.94. But, this made more importers to shy away. So, the volume picked up dropped to 62 million kg from 96 million kg.
