Johnson & Johnson arm Lifescan recalls one lot of diabetes strips

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Dec. 28 About 20,000 boxes of OneTouch Ultra Brand blood-glucose monitoring test strips have been voluntarily recalled in India by Lifescan, a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Internal enquiry

An internal investigation of recent consumer complaints at their call-centre revealed that test strips in one lot (2679712) did not meet the company’s performance standards, a note from the company said.

The use of these strips by diabetes patients could result in inaccurately high blood glucose test results, leading to improper treatment and possible injury, it added.

Intimation given

Lifescan is a manufacturer of blood glucose monitoring systems and has intimated the regulatory Drug Controller General of India, besides doctors, distributors of the product, and customers on its database, a company official told Business Line.

The product is imported from Scotland and is priced at Rs 800 per box of 25 strips, or Rs 32 per strip. The internal team is investigating the reason for the product not meeting company standards, the official said.

Clarification

The company has clarified that only one lot of the test strips were recalled. Products bearing the above mentioned number on the outside of the test strip box or the label of the test strip vial should not be used, the company said.

Products that did not bear the recalled lot number could continue to be used, it added.
