TN civil supply body cautions against rice exports

Our Bureau

Thanjavur, Dec. 28 The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Employees Association has appealed to the Union Government to stop the export of rice, which may result in deficit of rice in the country, particularly in Tamil Nadu.

In a press release issued here on Thursday, the State President, Mr A.M. Gopu, and State General Secretary, Mr C. Chandrakumar, said that the Union Government has liberalised the export policy on rice and allowed export of all varieties of rice.

Previously, only Basmati rice was exported. Because of the liberalised export policy, traders who purchase paddy in Tamil Nadu take it to Kerala and Andhra Pradesh and export them.

Tamil Nadu’s requirement for an year is 90 lakh tonnes. Fifty lakh tonnes of rice is produced in the State itself. The rest is received from a Central pool and from other States like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Moreover, the Tamil Nadu Government is implementing the Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme, which is beneficial for the poor. It should also take steps to check the export of rice so that it will not face any problem in continuing with its low-priced rice scheme, they said.
