‘Centre to consider flood aid for TN’

Tiruchi, Dec 28

The Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, has assured that the Centre would consider the Tamil Nadu Government’s demand for Rs 1,510 crore of assistance for relief and restoration in the wake of the extensive damages caused by the recent rains in the State. “We’ll consider the request with sympathy as soon as the letter comes from the State Government,” Mr Chidamabaram said in response to a query during a brief interaction with presspersons her e on Friday. Earlier, inaugurating the Pandyan Grama Bank’s 179th branch here, the first in the City, Mr Chidambaram said about 20-25 more branches of rural banks would be opened in the State soon to cover all districts. The 92 rural banks in the country were offering all the services that are available in nationalised banks. The Pandyan Grama Bank was one of the top performers among the rural banks in the country. The bank had a business mix of Rs 2,312 crore, with Rs 1,141 crore deposits and Rs 1,171 crore of advances.
