‘Retailing is growing at a rate of 7 to 8 per cent per annum, which places its employment potential at around two million direct jobs in the next two years.’ Our Bureau Kochi, Dec. 28 The fast-growing retail networks in the organised sector in Kerala have thrown up huge employment potential and career prospects for the younger generation in the State. Retailing in the organised sector is poised to become the next biggest employment vehicle in India after BPOs. It is pointed out that the retailing is growing at a rate of 7 to 8 per cent per annum as per industry estimates, which places its employment potential in the country at around two million direct jobs in the next two years. Changing lifestyles coupled with strong income growth and growing Western influence are attributed to the fast growth of the retail networks in India, prompting it to spread its wings to tier-two and tier-three cities in quick succession. Short-term coursesThe huge job potential opened up by the retail networks has also begun to reflect in the rush for short-term courses in the field, according to Mr R. Balachandran, Chairman and Managing Director of the Kochi-based SB Global Educational Resources (P) Ltd. The career-oriented educational institution had been receiving stepped up enquiries in all its training centers located at Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Thrissur and Thaliparamba besides Kochi. Candidates need to have completed their Plus Two, the minimum qualification required to be considered for the short-term certificate courses. The courses aim at equipping them with specialised skills, apart from creativity and knowledge, to understand retailing as a business management discipline. Successful candidates were finding cent per cent placements in major retail networks both within and outside Kerala, he added. Value additionBesides the course on retailing skills, SB Global has been conducting programmes mainly for the service industry, in hotel management, airline, travel and tourism apart from the value additions of communication and soft skills. The institution’s focus continues to be on creating professionals who are benchmarked to international standards and who are accepted by the respective industries, Mr Balachandran said.
