Standards & Benchmarks Industry & Economy - Foods & Food Processing Leavitt inspects Kochi port facilities
Mr Michael O. Leavitt Our Bureau Kochi, Jan. 9 Mr Michael O. Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services, US Department, on Wednesday inspected the facilities at Kochi Port to ensure that shipping and other export related activities are being carried out as per international standards. He is in India as part of his mission to identify key areas of quality concerns in the food and drug industry. The Port Trust Chairman, Mr N. Ramachandran, along with other senior officials of the port took the visiting dignitaries around the port in a boat, showing them the facilities available. Kochi is the only major port in India chosen by the US delegation for the visit, which is basically to make sure that the food and other products are manufactured in India as per the American standards. The Chairman also held a discussion and made a brief presentation to Mr Leavitt about the facilities offered by the port and its geographical advantages in the international maritime route. Later speaking to reporters, he said that US is willing to extend technical assistance to India for developing a centre for FDA to ensure safety of medicines and drugs as well as food products produced in the country.
