Rural transport

This with reference to the article “Transporting people out of poverty” (Business Line, January 8). A good transport system is a precondition for economic and social development. Any project that improves rural transport systems helps farmers in that it enables lucrative commercial farming and increases total productivity in agriculture. Agri-products get better prices with little wastage by timely marketing with good road infrastructure.

Another key advantage of a good rural transport system is that it aids the mobility of agri-labour; farmers can more easily take up off-season unemployment in urban areas. Also, it helps rural children get to schools faster.
