Letters Mixed blessing Tata’s small car, valued at Rs 1 lakh, will be a mixed blessing. A blessing for middle-class commuters who can fulfil their desire for a four-wheeler, which was so far beyond their means. But it will put tremendous pressure on the already inadequate road space and add to traffic jams. Further, small cars in large numbers will cause a surge in carbon emissions and aggravate the worsening environmental situation, even with maximum fuel efficiency. This problem can only be addressed if more electric/hybrid models appear on the roads. Mr Ratan Tata, as Member of the National Hydrogen Energy Board, will hopefully go the extra mile to put the country on the world map as a leader in hydrogen/ fuel-cell vehicles in the next five years.
