Infrastructure States - Maharashtra Mumbai integrated terminal: Work to begin Shubhra Tandon Mumbai, Jan. 10 The first step towards an integrated terminal at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport will commence soon. The ongoing refurbishment in terminals 2B and 2C of the existing international airport at Sahar would be complete by March-end. Following this, all the current flights operating from 2A will be shifted to the renewed site and 2A will be cordoned off and broken down. Speaking to Business Line, a senior official from Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) on condition of anonymity said, “Currently, 46 international airlines operate from the international airport divided between 2A and 2C for departures. Only the ground floor of Terminal 2B, which is the immigration area, is currently in use, while the first floor is not. We are working towards amalgamation of 2B and 2C, which is slated to be complete by March, where all the existing flight operations would move. Once that is done, April onwards 2A will become the construction site for the integrated terminal.” The Mumbai airport operator plans to start domestic and international flight operations from an integrated terminal by 2014. This is in line with the practice existing in most countries. The construction work for the first phase of 55,000 square metres (2A) is likely to be complete by 2010. More facilitiesIn terms of passenger amenities, the airport operator plans to start entertainment zone after completion of first phase of construction at the current international airport site. The duty-free operations would begin at the international airport from next month. More Stories on : Infrastructure | Maharashtra
