Letters Clarification This refers to the news item “MOP shortage affects Assam tea estate” (Business Line, January 9). The report attributes the shortage of MOP in Assam to reduced supply from Indian Potash Ltd (IPL), which has been described as the “sole canalising agency for import of MOP.” The report further says that IPL has suspended imports due to sharp rise in global prices, etc. We are writing this to clarify the above-said report is factually incorrect. MOP fertiliser is a totally decanalised product since 1993. And there are more than 10 fertiliser companies, including IPL, that import MOP. Further, so far as IPL is concerned, there has been no shortfall in our supplies to Assam during the period April-December 2007, compared to the same period in 2006. Against 15,779 tonnes supplied to Assam during April- December 2006, our MOP supply in the first nine months of the current calendar year totals 23,524 tonnes. This is almost 49 per cent more than last year. In the case of other smaller North-Eastern States also, our supplies are about 40 per cent more. If Assam is still facing a shortage of MOP, the blame cannot be laid at the door of IPL for insufficient supply. P. S.
