Volvo Ocean Race to call at Kochi

Kochi Jan. 16 With the prestigious Volvo Ocean Race poised to stop over at this port city, Kochi is all set to take its place among the select ports of the world. This will be a unique honour, the Cochin Port Trust said in a statement here.

The Volvo Ocean Race is the world’s premier offshore round the world yacht race and is considered one of the most demanding team sporting events, the statement added.

Scheduled to start in Alicante, Spain, in October 2008, the Race will cover a total of 39,325 nautical miles and touch 12 ports including Kochi, before finishing 9 months later in July 2009 at St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Kochi Stopover Port Agreement is to be signed on Friday in Kochi by Mr Andy Hindley, Race Director, Volvo Ocean Race, Mr N Ramachandran, Chairman, Cochin Port Trust, and Mr K.G. Mohanlal, Managing Director, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation . Mr Paul de Voijs, MD, Volvo Cars India and Mr Eric Leblanc, MD, Volvo India Pvt Ltd., will be present on the occasion.
