Poultry States - Tamil Nadu TN poultry producers cut price on bird flu reports Our Bureau Coimbatore, Jan. 17 The Namakkal-based layer producers have reduced the farm-gate price of shell eggs by 15 paise to Rs 1.60 per piece on Thursday. The price reduction, the second one in four days, comes in the wake of the reports of bird flu hitting the poultry farms in West Bengal where the avian influenza (H5N1) took heavy toll of chickens in the districts forcing the health authorities to order extensive bird culling. Price cutThe Namakkal Zonal Committee of the NECC had effected a cut in wholesale egg procurement price on Monday last for the first time, after several months, by slicing the rate by 10 paise per egg to Rs 1.75. Little impact seenThe egg trade sources said that the West Bengal bird flu incidents will not have great impact on the markets in the South, which are far removed from the affected poultry zone. However, it may have a bearing on egg exports which in turn may cast its impact on domestic market sale. No activityThe trade sources pointed out that the egg trade remained bereft of activity in the past two days due to Pongal festival holidays and it will take another day or two for the trade to react to the developments that have happened in West Bengal.
