Idea Cellular net zooms 108%

Mumbai, Jan. 19 Buoyed by an expanded subscriber base, the country’s sixth largest telecom operator Idea Cellular has more than doubled its net profit for the quarter ended December 31, 2007.

The company’s net profit was up 108.1 per cent to Rs 236.7 crore against Rs 113.7 crore reported in the corresponding year ago quarter.

Idea ended the quarter with a subscriber base of 21.05 million, adding 2.38 million subscribers during the quarter, said a communication from the company. In its current 11 service areas of operation, Idea increased its subscriber market share to 15.8 per cent from 15.6 per cent, on a sequential basis.

On Friday, the Idea scrip was down by 4.8 per cent to close at Rs 136.05 on the BSE.
