Telecommunications Mobile congestion levels lower: TRAI Our Bureau New Delhi, Jan. 22 Not withstanding the crunch in spectrum, mobile operators have reported lower congestion levels during the quarter ended September 2007. A report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said the number of points of interconnect having congestion levels higher than the permissible limits have decreased from 457 in June 2007 to 348 in September 2007. The points of interconnect (POI) is the physical place where two operators connect their respective network with each other. Out of these 348 POIs in September 2007, in 158 POIs the level of congestion was more than 5 per cent as compared with 218 POIs in June 2007. The number of such POIs where the level of congestion was more than 10 per cent was 111 in September, whereas it was 151 in June. The number of worst affected POIs where congestion level is more than 40 per cent is 37 compared to 46 in the previous quarter. Among the private service providers, Reliance Communications has the largest number of POIs having congestion (121 POIs) followed by Bharti Airtel (107 POIs), Dishnet (37 POIs), Tata (29 POIs) and Vodafone (19 POIs). The circles which are badly affected due to POI congestion were Bihar, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and West Bengal.
