KSIC to open outlets in Kerala cities

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 25 Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation Ltd (KSIC), a fully owned undertaking of the Karnataka Government, is planning to open retail outlets in all major cities in Kerala.

KSIC, which is inaugurating an outlet here on Saturday, the first one in the State, will open another outlet in Kochi within the next six months, according to Mr S. Philomen Raj, Marketing Manager of the corporation.

He said here on Friday that previously KSIC was selling its products through dealers all over the country. But there had been complaints of duplicate products being marketed under the corporation’s brand name, which prompted the company to set up its own retail outlets.

Rise in turnover

Mr Raj said that the turnover of KSIC had steeply increased in the last couple of years. From Rs 27 crore in 2005-06, the turnover went up to Rs 41 crore in 2006-07. There had been around 20 per cent year-to-year growth in turnover in the last few years, he added.

He noted that unlike in the past, KSIC would now showcase designer collection of ‘crepe de chine’ sarees, ‘Kasuti embroidery’ sarees and georgettes and plain printed sarees under the name of ‘Threads of Gold’ designed by Bangalore-based Ms Deepika Govind.

The company had obtained Geographical Indication Registration for ‘Mysore Silk’ in accordance with the provisions of the Geographical Indication Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. It had also obtained ISO 9001-2000 and EMS 14001-2004 certification, Mr Raj said.
