Kolkata Book Fair case to be heard on Jan 28

Two public interest litigations have been filed challenging the venue of Kolkata Book Fair, at Park Circus.

Kolkata, Jan. 25

The fate of Kolkata Book Fair, 2008 is still hanging in the balance as the Division Bench of Calcutta High Court, comprising the Chief Justice, Mr S.S. Nijjar, and Mr Justice P.C. Ghose will pass its order on January 28.

Two public interest litigations have been filed challenging the venue of Kolkata Book Fair, at Park Circus.

The State Government, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the Pollution Control Board, Publishers’ Guild opposed the petitions.

The Counsel for Guild submitted that after sunset the Salt Lake area becomes risky for women and children, so the fair can be held at Park Circus Maidan.

The petitioners urged that the Guild was adamant to hold the fair at Park Circus Maidan.

It has been submitted that total arrangement for holding the fair is nearly complete, and huge money has already been deployed.

The new venue has not been tested as yet, so it would be premature to say about pollution and other hazards, the Counsel stated.

The Guild further stated that it was ready to comply with any stipulation the High Court may impose and committed that the fair could be stopped in case there was any deviation, the Counsel stated.
