Our Bureau

Chennai, Jan. 26 More Indians are taking the training programmes offered by the Japanese Association For Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS).

AOTS, which comes under the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, is a training organisation that provides technical training to people from developing countries. It aims to help technology transfer and thereby seeks to facilitate friendly relations between Japan and other countries.

Now, thanks to the rising demand from India for such training programmes, AOTS will offer courses specifically designed for India, Mr Kazuo Kaneko, President, AOTS, told Business Line on Saturday.

Varied programmes

AOTS undertakes training projects for engineers and managers. The number of Indians who took the training increased from 161 in 2003 to 678 in 2006. Nearly half the participants are from the automotive sector. The training programmes are varied. For example, there is one for SMEs that helps transfer Japanese SME technologies.

AOTS announces training projects through its numerous alumni associations across the world and through bodies such as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Automotive Components Manufacturers Association (ACMA).

Usually, corporate members such as associations send their staff to Japan to take AOTS training.

The training typically involves an orientation course in Japanese language and culture and then, technical training such as those for shop-floor practices and management.

In terms of the number of participants, India ranks third after China and Thailand. Mr Kaneko observed that as India grows economically, its manpower requirements would go up manifold. Training with AOTS would help, he said.
