Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 27 The 20th Kerala Science Congress will begin here tomorrow. The event’s focal theme will be the challenges posed by emerging and re-emerging infections such as chikungunya.

Dr E. P. Yesodharan, Executive Vice-President, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment said that the four-day conference will focus on developing strategies to fight the crisis caused by infections. Well-known medical practitioners will present their experiences and ideas to help create an action plan that can be implemented at the grassroots level.

A highlight of the event is a ‘People’s Science Corner’, which will serve as a platform for people who have developed grassroots innovations, products or services without possessing a formal degree or technical qualifications.

There will be five parallel sessions focussing on 10 themes and also an exhibition as part of the conference.

On the final day of the event, children who represented Kerala in the National Children’s Science Congress will present their projects.

About 200 students selected from all districts of the State will participate in the session. The Chief Minister, Mr V. S. Achuthanandan, will inaugurate the science congress at the University Senate Hall on Monday evening. The technical sessions of the event will begin on Tuesday.

The Education Minister, Mr M.A. Baby, will address the valedictory function on Jan 31.
