Kandla port handles more traffic

Kandla port: Recording blistering growth

In traffic handling, Kandla port crossed 50 million tonnes (mt) a few days ago. During the same period last year, the throughput was little less than 41 mt. As of now, the growth has been around 23.6 per cent compared with the national average of 11 per cent. Kandla Port Trust sources attribute this to several factors such as the increased productivity, as high as 33 per cent; impressive growth in the throughput of oil traffic, 25.6 mt so far in the current year compared with 18.9 mt in the same period last year; and a significant increase in the number of ships handled — 1,935 (1,687). Most important, the average cargo handling charge at the port remains at the very competitive level of Rs 35.6 per tonne helping the port achieve the country’s most cost-effective port status. In the third quarter of the current fiscal, the port handled 17.01 mt compared with 14.67 mt during the same period of the previous fiscal.
