HCL Tech sets up test lab for electronic hardware products

“The lab will reduce the lead time for new product introduction by 12-15 weeks.”

Chennai, Jan. 29 HCL Technologies has set up a lab to test durability and robustness of products with electronic hardware such as medical devices, network cables and mobile phones. The company claims to be the first in the private sector to have such a facility.

Company officials did not reveal investment in the lab set up at Ambattur, Chennai.

So far, the testing of products was done only by government agencies such as the Electronics Test and Development centre in Chennai. It used to take three to four months to test the durability and robustness of a product.

However, with HCL’s ‘Electro Magnetic Compatibility and Durability Test Lab’ clients can do the tests in a few days, said Mr G.H. Rao, Head and Vice-President, Hi Tech Engineering Services, HCL Technologies.

For clients, the lab will reduce the lead time for new product introduction by 12-15 weeks, he told newspersons.

The lab offers hardware product companies the complete spectrum of services for their product lifecycle.

This includes a range of environmental testing such as thermal shock, rain, dust, temperature cycling, humidity, salt fog and vibration.

Mr K. Shivakumar, General Manager, Global Business Management, HCL Technologies, said around 18 customers use the testing services. Till now, the company provided product design and development services to its clients.
